About this project

Element (formerly Riot) is the flagship Android client for the Matrix open network for secure, decentralised communication. Built entirely in Kotlin with Jetpack components, it demonstrates a large-scale, modular app architecture with multi-module Gradle setup, dependency injection, and end-to-end encryption via the Matrix Rust SDK.

The project is a strong reference for anyone wanting to study federated/decentralised app design, real-time sync engines, and complex state management in a production Android codebase that receives frequent updates from an active open-source community.

Project Overview
Element — Matrix Messaging Client for Android is an advanced-level CSE project designed for B.Tech students. Official Android client for the Matrix decentralised communication protocol, offering encrypted group chat, voice and video calling.

Objectives
- Understand the problem statement and define clear functional requirements for the system.
- Structure the application into clean, reusable modules with proper data handling and validation.
- Design and implement the complete solution using Kotlin, Android SDK, Matrix SDK, Jetpack.
- Test the implementation, document the results, and prepare a working demonstration.

Software and Tools
- Android Studio
- Gradle
- Kotlin
- Matrix Rust SDK

Technology Stack
Kotlin, Android SDK, Matrix SDK, Jetpack, Room

Working Principle and Implementation
The application follows a modular structure: a user-facing interface collects input, the core logic processes the data and applies the required rules, and the results are stored or presented back to the user. Data is managed through Room. The project is organised so that each module can be developed, tested and extended independently.

Applications
- Academic mini/major project submission for B.Tech (CSE).
- Base platform that can be extended with additional features for real-world use.
- Hands-on practice with Kotlin, Android SDK, Matrix SDK.

Learning Outcomes
- Practical understanding of Kotlin, Android SDK, Matrix SDK.
- End-to-end project workflow: requirement analysis, design, implementation and testing.
- Documentation and presentation of a complete engineering project.
